Articles & Curricula

My most recent publication is in volume 19, issue 1 of choice magazine from early 2021. Titled “Three Powerful Questions: Engaging Spiritual Wisdom in Secular Coaching,” the article brings together what I’ve learned about coaching as a part of the Gay Coaches Alliance and what I know as a long-time spiritual director. You can access the article here, but I encourage you to explore choice if you have an interest in coaching!

I have had articles as well as poetry and an interview published in Trilithon: The Journal of Scholarship and the Arts from the AODA (Ancient Order of Druids in America). The AODA is a nature-centered spiritual community that includes members of many cosmologies, cultures, and nations, sharing practices of learning rather than theological dogma. The articles, linked below, are available in free PDFs of the journal or in hardcopies that can be purchased from the AODA.

Music and Audio

I am excited to share a new podcast with you — The Staircase: One Story at a Time. Caitlin Striff-Cave is talking with a wide range of people about what gives their life purpose and sharing those conversations with all of us. The episodes are 30 minutes or less, so an easy listen when you need a bit of inspiration or a break in your day.

My episode, The Garden of Life, is from September 12, 2021. Caitlin and I talk about the role of delight in my sense of purpose and as it feeds spiritual and ethical life overall. Please give The Staircase a listen either on Spotify or on Anchor FM!

A Light in the Darkness album

I recorded A Light in the Darkness in 1998, back when I was performing as a musician and storyteller in upstate New York and beyond. Bringing together harp, voice, and other instruments–both Irish and not–this album is grounded in the Irish tradition of suantraí, meaning lullabyes and other restful music. Although my spiritual and academic work has taken center stage for me since that time, this music is still available via CD and soon will be available electronically.

The player below will give you a taste of what’s on the album. Please email me if you’d like to purchase a CD or to be placed on the list to be notified when it’s available electronically!

Books

My writing (and commentary on my writing) has appeared in Justice on Earth and The Through Line, both from Skinner House Publications. They are available in hard copy from InSpirit and electronically through Amazon.

“Cherishing Our World: Avoiding Despair in Environmental Justice Work” is my chapter in Justice on Earth. I draw on traditional and contemporary Universalist theology to help us understand the work as grounded in love and delight, rather than a fear that can lead to giving up in the face of climate change and crisis.

The text of my Berry Street lecture (“Beyond Both/And”) and commentary on it and others by Kate Walker (“Boom!”) are part of The Through Line, a reflection on 200 years of ministerial commentary through the longest running lecture series in the United States.

Centering includes quotes from me taken from the conference in which the essays in the book were shared and at which I served as the provider of daily worship. I was honored to participate, but did not contribute a chapter.

I am now working with an editing team from the Gay Coaches Alliance to create a book about the gifts of coaching as gay men. We expect it to be available in May 2022. You can find excerpts and examples of the chapters here.

Workshops and Video

I was honored to become part of the Ministerial Conference at Berry Street, a 200-year old lecture series, now held by the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association each year. As part of the panel addressing What Does It Mean for Religious Leaders to “Speak Truth to Power?”, I delivered my remarks titled “Beyond Both/And.” (My portion of the lecture can be found from 42:30-55:00 of the video.) You may also find my text and much more in The Through Line.

I have offered other workshops and keynotes for the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association, the Rowe Center’s spiritual guidance/spiritual direction program, the Fine Line Creative Arts Center, Ferry Beach Retreat and Conference Center, the Gay Coaches Alliance, and more.

I am often asked to speak or teach about spiritual formation, the practice of ministry and spiritual direction, and the connections of liberal theology to the natural world. When I’m especially fortunate, I also get to address the arts and sexuality, too.

You can also find video of me preaching most weeks at the Universalist Church of West Hartford on the church’s YouTube channel. We livestream every Sunday, giving people all over the world the opportunity to be a part of our worship services.
